South Korea's democracy is prone to populist inclinations. It is still healthier than we had hoped for.

The country is in search of an innovative development paradigm. The Confucian culture, which emphasizes respect for ancestors and as and gender-specific family relationships, continues to be influential in the society. However, there are signs that a secularist culture is emerging.

Origins

In the early days the ancestors of the today's Koreans were capable of survival through hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate crops including millet and beans. They also raised livestock and produced furs. They formed tribal states in Manchuria and later on the Korean peninsula. They also created a metallurgy business, making iron tools and bronze. They traded with other countries and introduced block printing to Japan, as well as styles of art as well as a written language and paper making.

Gojoseon was founded in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. This state adopted Chinese culture which included Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. In the name of filiopiety, fathers were accountable to their families and had to be respected and obeyed by all people, even their children and grandchildren.

Goryeo, a country that was ruled from 918 to 1392 CE in the year 1392 CE, introduced to the world the Hangul Alphabet based upon the patterns created by the mouth when pronouncing. This greatly improved communication and led to an increase in the writing of Buddhist text. Additionally, movable metallic type printing was introduced, and woodblock printing was improved. The evolution of Korea

The Korean peninsula was inhabited from Neolithic times to. Baekje was the most powerful of these states, was diminished by the collapse of Goguryeo (676 CE) and was left with only its southern regions in Manchuria, and the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy, prospered for a time.

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to cooperate to expand their territories. In the end, Silla, with significant Chinese assistance, defeated all other states and unified the peninsula in 935 CE.

As Korea enters the post-crisis era its development model is in flux. The people who are affronted by the immense cost of the old system advocate an extensive program of liberalization of capital, labor, and product markets. On the other hand, people who support the old system try to keep it alive through nationalist sentiments, and by exaggerating fears about possible job losses.


Policy and academic analysts are starkly divided as to the extent to which these two developments are driving Koreas shift towards a new model of economic governance. This article reviews developments to date, by looking at five phases of the country's political evolution including the illiberal democratic period (1945-60) democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) and authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and democratic participation (2002 to present). This article also identifies key factors that are driving these developments.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made progress in promoting their views to this group. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that nearly three-quarters of respondents did not believe in the theory of evolution. Of those who voted, 41% stated that there was no scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs, and 17 percent said they did not understand it. This level of disbelief is comparable to that of the United States where a similar number do not believe that humans evolved from less advanced types of life.

In the past, the majority of the anti-evolution movement in Korea was focused on educating college students and leading them to Christ. In 1980 the year 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs.  original site  and Duane Gish of ICR as the main speakers. This event attracted a huge number of pastors, professors, church leaders, and scientists.

The success of this event led to the establishment of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st, 1981. The event was extensively covered in the national media, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the organization published its own activities and published articles about scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated several slides and film strips from ICR as well as some books on creationism which were published outside of Korea. KACR members lectured throughout the nation in universities and churches.

One example of an KACR success story was at the KAIST university in Seoul. Students at the KAIST university in Seoul were so interested in creationism, they raised money and secured support to build a small creationist museum on campus.

In addition to its work, KACR has published a bimonthly publication called CREATION. The magazine covers subjects that pertain to the science of creation. It also sponsored a series lectures by ICR staff. It has also created an organization of local branch offices that offer talks and seminars to schoolchildren and community groups.

Changes in South Korea

In the latter half of the 19th century and the beginning of 20th, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced with miniskirts, and other foreign fashion elements. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by rock and roll and jazz. In the period of this transition the samulnori, or the masked dance-dramas were very popular. These dramatic pieces were performed to the beat of shaman drums and other instruments of music.

The economic crisis has formed Korea's new paradigm of development. The primary challenge for the new regime is to strike a balance between market-oriented and state-led economic policies. It also involves changing the incentives, monitoring, and disciplining strategies that have been a part of the pre-crisis system. These issues are discussed in Chapters 3 and 4.

Baekje, founded by Onjo, prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo was established by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo and other regions as well as migrant workers from northern China. In the 4th century, in the early part of, Baekje was a major regional power, and expanded its territory as far as Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do in the south. The kingdom was in constant conflict with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanders at the border.

The fall of Silla in the 8th and early 9th centuries saw powerful local factions to rise. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as the capital. He controlled a part of today's Jeolla province and Chungcheong. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju. He was an adversary to Goguryeo.
